Global Warming
In the 'Gas Station' days all the ice cream was made using a nineteenth century rock and salt maker. Our biggest environmental impact was probably Ben's clapped out VW campervan. When we got a bit bigger in the 80's we strove to be as efficient as possible, but if we're honest that was initially driven by cost savings. It was in 2002 that the overwhelming majority of our staff felt we had to start doing something to combat global climate change. Dubbed 'Lick Global Warming', we launched a campaign that got us looking at our business and the changes we could make.
We support sustainability projects
We’ve also put a lot of thought into how we can reduce the greenhouse gas emissions associated with making our ice cream. This includes a carbon inventory that measures emissions from cow to cone. We strive to reduce, re-use and re-cycle where possible and for the remainder, we try to offset our environmental impacts by supporting sustainability projects.
But as combating global warming requires everyone to play a part, we try to support causes that help spread this message, such as Earth Hour.
Although we can’t exactly turn off all our lights (we might scoop up the wrong flavors for you!), we do turn off part of our lights during Earth Hour 2011.
We also sponsored 5,000 mini cups towards the World Wildlife Fund’s Official Earth Hour Party to aid fundraising efforts.
